When this political merry-go-round stops, where will that leave you?
Sajid Javid MP fired the gun for mandatory regulation and qualifications in 2017 but it wasn’t in the October 2019 Queen’s Speech. Will it happen and if so, when? Same with leasehold, commonhold and enfranchisement reform, also absent from the speech. Are these reforms coming swiftly, or are we hearing the clattering can being kicked down the road?
Dame Judith Hackitt is pushing hard for culture change in the safe management of buildings. Some of that made it into the Queen’s Speech, but is all that change really going to happen? Do we retrain, or sub-contract for the Building Safety Manager role, and who is going to be the all-important “Accountable Person”? What will all this cost, and who pays?
And what of industry itself? Are we not already reforming? Is there an appetite to go further without waiting for the House to put its house in order? Dame Judith asks why anyone would wait until the law changes to improve safety and save lives - a good point, though not without some serious challenges. Can we afford to do more, or do differently? Can we afford not to?
And what about you? How are you doing? IRPM asked the question in the 2019 Annual Seminar and we are seeing it everywhere now. What works and what doesn’t?
With brilliant speakers, the legendary IRPM Legal Updates and the biggest networking and exhibition event in the property manager’s calendar, this is the one event in the calendar you cannot afford to miss. This is the big one! We will see you there.
